How to use your phone in VR
Virtual Reality allows us to completely immerse ourselves in other fantastic worlds to let go of everyday life. Within VR some people don't want to miss what's going on in the real world. Wouldn't it be useful to use your phone in VR? This is how it works:
How to put your phone in VR headset?
Pretty easy: Holoswitch is an app that directly connects your smartphone with your PC and makes it possible for you to see phone notifications in VR. All you have to do is to download and install Holoswitch for SteamVR AND Holoswitch for Android or iOS.
Phone calls and messages: See your phone notifications in VR
Holoswitch’s first and probably most important feature is Notifications. It directly fights FOMO in VR by forwarding your phone notifications coming from e.g. WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or any other app to your VR headset in a very non-intrusive way to not break any immersion. The notifications will appear on the Holocom - a virtual smart device on your wrist. If you activate Pop-up Notifications you’ll see them directly in your VR in a pop-up overlay.
Here's how to set it up:
Connect your Android phone to VR
After installing both apps simply launch Holoswitch in SteamVR and then switch over to Holoswitch’s mobile app. After a quick onboarding message, you will see a list of Detected Devices. If your phone and your PC are in the same network you’ll directly see your PC in this list. Simply press on your PC’s name and the apps will be connected.
Connect your iPhone to VR
Holoswitch is the only app that connects your iPhone to VR. For the iOS version both phone and PC need to be in the same network and you’ll need an additional Bluetooth connection (BT 4.0 or higher) between the two devices. Activate Bluetooth and your PC and your phone and start the Holoswitch iOS app. The app will now guide you through the connection process via WiFi and Bluetooth and your apps will be connected.
Privacy and data security
Holoswitch connects your phone and your PC via your local network and Bluetooth. This means the whole data transfer and message forwarding goes through your local network and Bluetooth connection. No cloud servers are involved in this transfer. Theoretically, Holoswitch can also be used without an internet connection. If your network is safe and secure then your messages will be, too.
More features for the best VR experience
Holoswitch is a VR multi-tool. We’ve created more features that will make your life in VR more convenient and easier:
Video recording in VR - and directly on your phone
You don’t need to run any external recording apps anymore to record some nice clips in VR. Holoswitch includes a VR Recorder. Just start the Recorder app on your Holocom, mute or unmute the VR headset’s microphone and start your recording directly from within VR without taking off your VR headset. After finishing your clip, it will be stored on your hard drive and you can directly watch your creation in Holoswitch’s Gallery. From there you can send your video to your phone and share it with your friends.
Peephole to the real world: See your phone camera in VR
Being in VR sometimes also brings a weird feeling of not knowing what’s happening around you. And sometimes you just want to keep an eye on your pets, kids, or others. The Peephole feature now allows you to take care of that while being in VR. It streams your phone’s camera directly to VR as an overlay. Use your phone as a baby cam in VR or position your phone in front of your window to not miss a delivery or someone’s coming in. You can start the Peephole directly from within VR via your Holocom.
Mirror phone in VR, phone calls in VR, and everything else to get immersed phone in VR?
New Holoswitch’s features will be added regularly. If you want to see what we’re working on at the moment, what’s in research, and what we’ve already released you can always check our Development Roadmap.
New features and improvements will always be based on our user’s needs. That’s why we created a User Voting Board where users can add suggestions and vote for other suggestions. We’re regularly checking them and adjust our Roadmap.
